I highly highly recommend taking private lessons. My fiance and I are taking them and absolutely love them. Not only will we actually be able to dance through our first dance, but it has had a lot of other positive effects as well. First, by taking a lesson together you have at least that time each week that you are spending together. We have found that this can be a great stress reliever as you are forced to forget about whatever else went on during the day and just focus on the steps. Further, if you practice enough dancing can be a great workout!
I would recommend private lessons over a DVD as they enable you to get feedback on how you and your partner look dancing together (i.e. when we started lessons we tended to look at the floor a lot (which doesn't look good). If we had been learning from a tape, we never would have known we were doing it!).
For anyone in the Baltimore, MD area, Beginning Ballroom (just google beginning ballroom and baltimore md on google) is where we are taking and we love it. They are really great about breaking down the steps and we've been learning something new every week!

Just a few short years ago, it seemed almost all our friends took dance lessons for their weddings. We didn't really get the big deal, then we went, and saw that it made a REALLY BIG difference, compared to those that didn't.
Well, it's been a few years, and we are the last of our old crew to get married. But, when we started looking around on the blogs for referrals for different things, we noticed that no one seems to be taking dance lessons for their weddings much anymore, at least none that we could find. Luckily, one of my friends still had a card for the company they used, and gave it to me (Lee and Christine, www.beginningballroom.com).
Everyone wants vendors to be cheap, convenient AND good, and we definitely got that. What really got us excited about them though, is they are a husband and wife team that started out as a wedding couple, getting ready to dance for their reception! They understand everything we are going through, and really know how to work with us! They offer all kinds of lesson, pricing and scheduling options, which helped us a lot.
Hope this helps anyone who is thinking about it. Even though there doesn't seem to be a lot people doing it anymore, we've been to enough friend's weddings (15 in just a few years) to know it's really a good idea.

Dance Lessons: Beginning Ballroom, Lee Gedansky
A+
I put off scheduling dance lessons too long and decided a week before the wedding that we needed to take some. I saw a recommendation for Beginning Ballroom on The Knot and was pleased that Lee was able to fit us in quickly. We originally thought we would do one individual two-hour lesson and be done with it, but decided that we really needed more practice and help and Lee was very accommodating with his schedule and was able to meet with us twice more in the next week. By the end of the 4 lessons we felt SO much more comfortable and confident in our ability to dance. Lee not only taught us to dance to our first song, but also helped us be able to dance to other songs as well. He and his wife teach together and are friendly and un-intimidating.

DANCE INSTRUCTION – Lee & Christine Gedansky of Beginning Ballroom (www.beginningballroom.com) – A+++
My DH and I went kind of crazy with the dance lessons – we started 8 months out. But I’m so glad we did, b/c it took us that long to figure out how to dance together. We wanted to really learn how to dance, not just choreograph one dance. During our first dance, I had no idea what moves my DH was going to pull – it was completely off the cuff – and it was great! We will definitely keep dancing – Lee & Christine do instruction (salsa, swing, ballroom, you name it!) at places like the Walters, the Belvedere 13th Floor, etc.. We liked our lessons so much that we ahd Lee and Christine come to our wedding and give a lesson to guests. Lots of fun!
